Requirements[edit]

To run the Automated Miner requires 4 things:

Energy: From a cable or portable sources

Pipe: Mining Pipe is consumed to dig down. Returned once the miner retracts

Drill bit: Mining Drill or Diamond Drill

Scanner: OD Scanner or OV Scanner

Operation[edit]

To use the miner insert a Drill into the topleft, a Scanner in the top right and the pipes into the top middle.

The miner will consume the pipes to dig down extracting ore it finds in its scan range.

Any ore found will be brought up and ejected onto the surface next to the miner. If the miner has a chest next to it ore will be stored inside it instead.

Once the miner has finished you can retract the pipes by removing the Drill bit. Placing blocks (Dirt etc.) in the pipe slot will fill the shaft with that block type.

Scanning range[edit]

A miner with an OD Scanner mines all ore in a 5x5 block area arount it.

However a miner with an OV Scanner mines all ore in a massive 9x9 block area!

Efficiency[edit]

For the Miner to be energy efficient, i.e. not cost anything in terms of energy to run, the miner must dig up 24 or more coal or 1 uranium. Usually the miner will bring one or two Uranium to the surface after every excavation from sea level to layer 5 (about 64 blocks).

I worked it out by looking at how many blocks were brought up (i.e. how many operations it has done) after laying 64 pipe and fully retracting it. I found it to average around 192 operations. Times that by 500 EU per operation and you have 192 times 500 which equals 96000 EU per entire excavation. When you burn coal in a generator you get 4000 EU per piece, and to find out how many pieces you need you devide 96,000 by 4000 and you get 24 pieces of coal. With uranium, you get 160,000 EU per piece after refining it into bars and using them in a reactor, which easily covers the energy cost of the miner.

Knowing this information allows you not let your miner leech your energy reserves if the only source of energy you get is from non renewable resources that are mined from the ground.
