The Automated Miner is the lazy man's answer to mining.

The Automated Miner requires two things to run: Energy and Mining Pipes.
Why spend all that time down in dangerous caves when with a little EU, and a few bits and pieces, you can mine ore from the surface!

Loading pipes into the miner is done by placing the amount you wish to drill down into the top slot. It places one pipe each level and while doing this, it looks for ore with the integrated OD Scanner.
Requirements
To run the Automated Miner requires 4 things:

When ore are found, it will start to dig to them and then mine them. All harvested ore will then be transported through the Mining Pipe and ejected on the Surface, next to the Miner.
Energy: From a cable or portable sources

The miner mines all ore in a 5x5 block area around it.
Pipe: Mining Pipe is consumed to dig down. Returned once the miner retracts

Drill bit: Mining Drill or Diamond Drill

Additionally, all liquids in the same area will be harvested if an Extractor Pipe is used.
Scanner: OD Scanner or OV Scanner
Operation
To use the miner insert a Drill Bit into the top-left, a Scanner in the top-right and your Mining Pipes into the top-middle.

Put some Mining Pipes in the upper slot and an energy source in the lower one.
The miner will consume the pipes to dig down extracting ore it finds in its scan range(See Scanning Rage section).

Now the Miner will start its operation, digging and planting Mining Pipes below it, as well as using the integrated OD Scanner to scan for nearby ore.
Any ore found will be brought up and ejected onto the surface next to the miner. Placing a chest next to the miner will result in the ore being stored in it instead.

Once detected, the Miner will dig to the detected ore and harvest it. But it can't mine impenetrable objects (e.g. Obsidian), or liquids, without specialized Mining Pipes.
Once the miner has finished you can retract the pipes by removing the Drill bit. Also you may place blocks (Dirt etc.) in the pipe slot to fill in the shaft when it retracts.

Then it will stop mining and the "Operation-Bar" will stay full without continuing to harvest.
Scanning range
A miner with an OD Scanner mines all ore in a 5x5 block area around it.

Once you've stripped the entire area, you can just put any sort of block into the upper slot.

The Miner will then start WITHDRAWING all laid Mining Pipes and replace them with the filling material (of the upper slot).
However a miner with an OV Scanner mines all ore in a massive 9x9 block area!
Putting in glass will result in pipes being withdrawn without filling the shaft, leaving a hole all the way to the bottom.

This way, you will never "consume" Mining Pipes. If the Miner stops operating in this mode, it has withdrawn all pipes and can be collected for placing at a new location.

Geothermal Generator combo
Liquids
If the miner hits water or lava while tunneling it will stop unless they are cleared.

A Miner adjacent to one or more Geothermal Generators, and using Extractor pipes will automatically supply the Geothermal Generator(s) with lava. Note the Miner still requires power.
Alternatively if you place a pump next to the miner (filled with empty cells) it will extract the liquids for you, storing the lava in the cells for power generation!

Extracted lava per operation is converted to 5000 EU. A single lava source block may be operated on multiple times before disappearing (may be random).

Rough power costs for one operation:

Mining Drill: ~450-470 EU

Diamond Drill: ~880-900 EU

OD Scanner: ~65-75 EU

OV Scanner: ~165-190 EU

So the cost to drill down 1 level with a Mining Drill + OD Scanner is ~460+~70 = 530

And the cost to drill down 1 level with a Diamond Drill + OD Scanner is ~990+~70 = 960

Diamond Drills are far more expensive but far faster. ~4 times as fast.

EU/Tick:

A miner with a Mining Drill and OD Scanner will use ~2-3 EU/t.

For the Miner to be energy efficient, i.e. not cost anything in terms of energy to run, the miner must dig up 24 or more coal or 1 uranium. Usually the miner will bring one or two Uranium to the surface after every excavation from sea level to layer 5 (about 64 blocks).
A miner with a Diamond Drill and OV Scanner will use ~20-24 EU/t due to the higher cost per tool and faster mining speed.

I worked it out by looking at how many blocks were brought up (i.e. how many operations it has done) after laying 64 pipe and fully retracting it. I found it to average around 192 operations. Times that by 500 EU per operation and you have 192 times 500 which equals 96000 EU per entire excavation. When you burn coal in a generator you get 4000 EU per piece, and to find out how many pieces you need you devide 96,000 by 4000 and you get 24 pieces of coal. With uranium, you get 160,000 EU per piece after refining it into bars and using them in a reactor, which easily covers the energy cost of the miner.
Other Notes
Miners can not mine through items like torches, redstone wiring etc.

Knowing this information allows you not let your miner leech your energy reserves if the only source of energy you get is from non renewable resources that are mined from the ground.

The Automated Miner is the lazy man's answer to mining.

Why spend all that time down in dangerous caves when with a little EU, and a few bits and pieces, you can mine ore from the surface!

Requirements[edit]

To run the Automated Miner requires 4 things:

Energy: From a cable or portable sources

Pipe: Mining Pipe is consumed to dig down. Returned once the miner retracts

Drill bit: Mining Drill or Diamond Drill

Scanner: OD Scanner or OV Scanner

Operation[edit]

To use the miner insert a Drill Bit into the top-left, a Scanner in the top-right and your Mining Pipes into the top-middle.

The miner will consume the pipes to dig down extracting ore it finds in its scan range(See Scanning Rage section).

Any ore found will be brought up and ejected onto the surface next to the miner. Placing a chest next to the miner will result in the ore being stored in it instead.

Once the miner has finished you can retract the pipes by removing the Drill bit. Also you may place blocks (Dirt etc.) in the pipe slot to fill in the shaft when it retracts.

Scanning range[edit]

A miner with an OD Scanner mines all ore in a 5x5 block area around it.

Liquids[edit]

If the miner hits water or lava while tunneling it will stop unless they are cleared.

Alternatively if you place a pump next to the miner (filled with empty cells) it will extract the liquids for you, storing the lava in the cells for power generation!

Energy Costs[edit]

A miner with a Diamond Drill and OV Scanner will use ~20-24 EU/t due to the higher cost per tool and faster mining speed.

Other Notes[edit]

Miners can not mine through items like torches, redstone wiring etc.
