A pump used on its own will suck up liquid directly below itself; this is probably not useful for lava, but can be useful for water since it respawns under the right conditions.
Once a liquid has been sucked up, the pump will fill either an empty bucket, an [[Empty Cell|empty cell]] placed in the pump's item slot or in an adjacent chest, or it can be pumped out directly to an adjacent machine using the [[Fluid Ejector Upgrade]]. The Pump is a tier 1 machine capable of pumping up liquids and compressing them into an Empty Cell or Universal Fluid Cell with a minimal use of power.

The pump can be placed next to a Miner to help it suck up lava encountered while mining, or the pump can be used on its own. Once a liquid has been sucked up, the pump will fill either an empty bucket, an empty cell placed in the pump's item slot or in an adjacent chest, or it can be pumped out directly to an adjacent machine using the Fluid Ejector Upgrade. The newly-filled item will be placed into an adjacent chest; if no chest is available, the item will be ejected into the world.

Cells or Buckets are not mandatory to turn the pump on because it has an internal storage.

The "grill" on the pump needs to face into the liquid you are pumping for it to work, the pump can therefore pump from any direction. Use a wrench to change the position of the grate.

Legacy[edit]

Obsolete: This information no longer applies to the current version of IC².

Before build 538, Geothermal Generators supplied with lava from pumps gain a 50% EU boost, at the cost of 200 EU for the pump. All you need to do is to place an Empty Cell on the top slot of the pump. The pump is also no longer limited to the block just beneath it, and can pull distant liquids.

Also removed in build 538 is the pump's ability to automatically supply an adjacent compressor with water to make snowballs. This functionality is bugged in IC² 1.64
