The Metal Former is a machine which is responsible for the vast majority of metal shaping in IC² - turning metal ingots into other things (and those other things into additional other things, sometimes).

- Main article: Metal shaping
The Metal Former has 3 modes, toggled by clicking the button underneath the progress bar. The button's icon will change to indicate the active mode.
- Rolling mode is used to turn ingots into plates and plates into item casings.
- Cutting mode is used to turn plates into cable and Iron Item Casings into Industrial Credits.
- Extruding mode is used to turn ingots directly into cable and create Iron Fences, Tin Cans, and empty Fuel Rods.
