The Hunting Knife can be crafted at level 10 Gatherer. When killing any mob(except sheep) with the hunting knife, it will cause that animal to drop items before it is killed(if lucky) and when it is killed, thus maximizing the material gain from each animal.
The hunting knife is a very fragile tool, and as such any gatherer should carry a supply of them when going in the wilderness for the hunt
Also, note that the hunting knife works on hostile mobs too. Its damage, however, is even lower than that of a wooden sword
