Use and notes
When placed, a transformer's higher-voltage texture is oriented toward the player. This is indicated by five dots (observe the images in the table below). The transformer's five other faces are each occupied by a single dot, indicating the lower-voltage side. Whether these faces are input or output is determined by the transformer's mode.
Transformers are always in either step-up or step-down mode.
- Step-down: accept input through the higher-voltage face, output through all valid connections to the lower-voltage faces. (Default, if no redstone signal is applied.)
- Step-up: accept input through all valid connections to the lower-voltage faces, output through the higher-voltage face.
There are three options to choose from in the GUI.
- Redstone toggled (default): transformer is in step-down mode without a redstone signal. When signal is applied, mode changes to step-up.
- Step-up: transformer is in step-up mode regardless of redstone signal state.
- Step-down: transformer is in step-down mode regardless of redstone signal state.
It is important to set the mode properly, in order to avoid errant redstone signals causing explosive problems.
Note: Transformers have a small internal EU buffer that is not indicated in their GUI (probably the size of one packet). Thus, remember to install Transformer upgrades in your machine before connecting it to the energy net, even if you don't have an active generator, just in case some EU still lingers somewhere. Ha haaa... oops.
To reorient a transformer, right-click with a wrench on the face you want to use for higher-voltage, or shift-right-click to set it as the opposite face.
To remove a transformer, simply wrench the higher-voltage face (or shift-wrench the face opposite it).
IC² currently has four transformers. Their step-down mode specifications are listed first, that being the default.
Step-down: Input 128 EU/t, Output 32 EU/t (x5)
Step-up: Input 32 EU/t (x5), Output 128 EU/t
Step-down: Input 512 EU/t, Output 128 EU/t (x5)
Step-up: Input 128 EU/t (x5), Output 512 EU/t
Step-down: Input 2048 EU/t, Output 512 EU/t (x5)
Step-up: Input 512 EU/t (x5), Output 2048 EU/t
Step-down: Input 8192 EU/t, Output 2048 EU/t (x5)
Step-up: Input 2048 EU/t (x5), Output 8192 EU/t
