Sticky Resin can be converted into Rubber using any furnace or Extractor. The Extractor is the most efficient method, but it requires a source of electricity, making a furnace your only choice when first starting out. Rubber Wood and saplings can also be converted into Rubber using an Extractor, but they yield significantly less than Resin. Rubber is primarily used in the creation of Cable. As you progress through the game, rubber will become a very important resource as most crafting recipes require at least 1 piece of rubber.

Rubber can be used to insulate many types of wire, most notably Copper Cable. As such, rubber is used in the crafting of many other recipes, such as Batteries, and therefore Generators and Bat Boxes, as well as many others.

Rubber is used to insulate every type of cable except for Glass Fibre Cable, Splitter Cable, and Detector Cable.  Since insulated cables are used in a large number of IC² recipes (including the Splitter and Detector recipes!), it's not a bad idea to have a lot of rubber handy if you're building or expanding, or just in general.  Rubber's great stuff.

You can use Rubber for crafting Cables or other stuff.

This is AWESOME!
