The Coke Kiln is a multiblock structure used to produce Coal Coke and Creosote Oil from Coal. It takes about two minutes[need to time it] to turn one coal into one coal coke, with 500mB of creosote oil as a byproduct.

Neither charcoal nor coal blocks seem to work with the Coke Kiln. Only plain old coal.

Compared to coal, coal coke burns twice as long. 1 coal coke will produce 8,000 EU in a Generator at 10EU/t, or 16,000 hU in a Solid Fuel Firebox at 20hU/t. 500mB of Creosote Oil will produce 1,500 EU in a Semifluid Generator at 8EU/t. Creosote doesn't seem to work with Liquid Fueled Fireboxes.

Crafting[edit]

You will need the following materials:

Grid Clay Ball.png Clay x104
Grid Iron Plate.png Iron Plate x1
Grid Iron Trapdoor.png Iron Trapdoor x1

You will also need water for crafting. I recommend having 26 Universal Fluid Cells filled with water (Grid Water Cell.png x26), but you can make do with fewer cells or even a single vanilla bucket. You will keep the cells/bucket.

Now that all the materials are assembled, craft 26 Refractory Bricks. You can use any source of water in the middle, but I recommend using Universal Fluid Cells because they stack.

Use three of those to craft one Coke Kiln, one Coke Kiln Hatch, and one Coke Kiln Grate.

Now you should have everything you need to build the Coke Kiln structure:

Now we can start building.

The structure itself takes up 3 cubic meters. Coal will have to come in through the top. Coal coke comes out of the side and creosote oil goes out the bottom, but neither output is automatic. I used Small Bronze Pipes and a Pump Attachment (LV) to pump the creosote out the bottom grate. A Pump or a Fluid/Solid Canning Machine with a Fluid Pulling Upgrade will work, too. You can use Hoppers or Item Buffers to put coal in the top hatch. A Compact Item Buffer with a Pulling Upgrade can automatically pull coal coke from the Coke Kiln block.

Once you've made space, place the Coke Kiln Grate. The grate will face you, I recommend using the Wrench (New) to make it face down.

Surround the Coke Kiln Grate with eight Refractory Bricks, to fill out the bottom layer.

For the second layer, place the Coke Kiln itself on the middle of one side. It doesn't matter which side you chose, but the Coke Kiln should be facing you. Fill out the rest of the sides with Refractory Bricks, but leave the middle block empty.

For the third and final layer, you must place the Coke Kiln Hatch in the middle, surrounded by the eight remaining Refractory Blocks. The Coke Kiln Hatch will face you when you place it, but you can use a wrench to make it face up.

Viola, your Coke Kiln is finished!

You can go further by placing a Compact Item Buffer to pull coal cokes from the Coke Kiln, and to eject items up to an Electric Sorting Machine that sends coal to the hatch and coal cokes somewhere else, like Solid Fuel Fireboxes or Generators. The creosote oil can be fed to a Semifluid Generator; Coke Kilns are slow enough that you can use one Semifluid Generator to handle creosote from multiple Coke Kilns.
