A Geothermal Generator works on the same basic principle as normal Generators do.

Geothermal generators use the heat of Lava to generate electricity. With the release of IC², the generators accept both Lava Buckets and Lava Cells. The latter are stackable and thus require less maintenance, but cost Tin to produce.

A single Geothermal Generator can store 24 units of lava - thus, inserting a full stack of Lava Cells will instantly use up 24 of them and fill out the lava gauge. Unlike the furnace, the Geothermal Generator does not consume the bucket when a lava bucket is used as fuel.
Additional Usages
If you have the BuildCraft mod installed, you can generate near infinite of power. Simply connect one (or more) of these magical machines to a BuildCraft Pump pumping from a lava lake in the Nether.

<strong>INFINITE<small>*</small> POWER!</strong>

If you have <span class="pops">Eloraam's RedPower</span> installed, lava can also be pumped from a RedPower volcano** into the generator.

<small>* Not responsible for limitations due to laws of physics.</small>
<small>** Not quite as "infinite" as the Nether.</small>

Tip
Using the Geothermal Generator with a connection to a Pump will provide an output of 30,000 EU instead of 20,000. For it to work properly, the Pump has to be above a lava source tile, and the Geothermal Generator needs to touching the Pump.

Additionally, an Empty Cell needs to be placed into the top of the pump (for unknown reason), and the initial powering of the pump can be done by placing 1 Redstone in the bottom slot of the Pump.

Note: Though it gives an increased EU (30,000), there is still a 200 EU per operation cost for the pump. The Geothermal Generator will charge the adjacent pump, for a total output of 29,800 EU per lava source tile.

Powerconverters-Mod
With the Powerconverters-Mod, steam engines can burn lava buckets and transfer the power through an engine generator. The engine generators are expensive, and buckets of lava are complicated to deal with, but it would produce 50,000 EU per lava bucket as opposed to 20,000 EU.
Place Water Buckets or a Water Cell in the lower slot (or place the Water Mill inside water), and optionally an RE Battery in the upper slot. The Water Mill will charge the battery or output power at a rate of 1 EU/t (manned) or 0.010 EU/t per block of adjacent water (unmanned). A single bucket produces 1000 EU and the Water Mill can store 4 buckets worth of water. The maximum output of an unmanned Water Mill is 0.25EU/t (3x3x3 cube of water with the mill in the middle, plus 1 piece of cable to direct the energy = 25 water tiles).

Note: In v.1.81 Unmanned Mode for Water Mills appears to be functioning

Water Towers
A Water Mill on its own will produce very little EU if left unmanned, even when completely surrounded in water. So it's better to build compact clusters of them. A 'water tower' is one of many methods.

A water tower is a number of watermills, usually stacked, such that they all feed to the same energy storage device and are surrounded by water. For best results, arrange the tower sections so that there's at least a one block layer of water around each watermill. Below is an example of a horizontal layer of a watermill.

Detailed Mechanics
A Water Mill only uses water that directly surrounds it (a 3x3x3 box with the Water Mill in the center). Each block of water adds roughly .01 EU/t to its overall output.

Using the water tower design from above will result in each Water Mill being surrounded by 21 water blocks like so:

21 * 0.010 = 0.21 EU/t from each watermill, meaning roughly 2.3 EU/t from each tower section (11 watermills)

Some notes about the behavior of some Water Mills that were studied:
* Water Mills can 'share' the same water block with seemingly no effect.
* Using flowing water instead of still water had no noticeable effect.
* A Water Mill suspended over water will still react to the water below it even though the watermill is not visibly touching the water.
* Water Mills are not noticeably affected by rainfall.

HAYO
For those who prefer old-school energy generation, we invented this nice little thingy.

The Water Mill can produce energy... by using WATER, isn't that suprising?
Sounds simple, doesn't it?
But i hope, you didn't forget the good ol' times? You know, the times where people were actually WORKING for their lives? The Water Mill is for THAT kind of people.
If you want to use it, fine, but keep in mind it needs a constant supply of fresh water to charge RE Batterys.

If your mouse-clicking finger hurts, don't blame us, HAYO!

Optionally place an RE Battery in the upper slot. The Wind Mill will charge the battery or output power at a rate of 0-4 EU/t depending on placement.

{{Grid/Machine

Detailed Mechanics
- A Wind Mill will produce on average 250 EU per Minecraft day multiplied by its height in the world.
This number varies greatly due to the highly unpredictable and constantly changing wind strength in the world; this number can be anything from 0 to 1000 EU. (Although numbers far below 150 or far above 320 are uncommon <!-- needs verification in 1.42 -->)

- A Wind Mill's efficiency can be hindered by any kind of block placed in a 9x9x7 area around it.

It's best to have the cable from the Wind Mill underneath it and down at least two blocks before turning.

- For each obstructing block, a Wind Mill's effective height lowers by 1.

- A Wind Mill treats non-block items like torches and Redstone wires as obstructions too.

- A Wind Mill doesn't treat the roof of the world as an obstruction.

- Wind Mills produce 50% extra EU/t in a thunderstorm, and 20% when it's raining but not in a thunderstorm.

- If a wind mill produces more than 5 EU/t, it has a chance of breaking. If a wind mill's effective height is no more than 80, it cannot break.

Examples:

A Wind Mill placed as high as possible (layer 256), with no obstructions (apart from the 2 cable blocks under the wind mill) will produce roughly 63500 EU (250 * 254) a day or 2.6 EU/t overall.

A Wind Mill that was placed near bedrock (layer 10) with no obstructions (not including the cable again) produced 2000 EU (250 * 8) a day (0.1 EU/t overall).

Wind Strength
* Minimum strength is 0, Maximum is 30.
* Modified every 128 ticks (About 6.4 seconds)
* Chance to increase or decrease by 1.
* 10% chance to increase if current strength is 0 to 20.
* 10% chance to decrease if current strength is 10 to 30.
* Current strength of 0 to 9 have (current strength)% chance to decrease in strength. (E.g. 0 current strength has 0% chance to decrease, 1 = 1% to decrease, ..., 9 = 9%)
* Current strength of 21 to 30 have (30 - current strength)% chance to increase in strength. (E.g. 21 current strength has 9% chance to increase, 22 = 8% to increase, ..., 30 = 0%)
Power
* Calculated every 128 ticks (About 6.4 seconds)
Maximum safe, with 2 cables, is 4.98 (y: 149, obstructions: 2, and thundering). Maximum safe, with 2 cables, is y=191 if you wish to ignore high wind and rain storms.
* Calculation is: power = s * (y - 64 - c) / 750; 's' is Wind Strength, y' is Block Height, and 'c' is number of blocks (not including the windmill itself) in a 9x9x7 area around the windmill.
* Power has a 50% (* 1.5) increase if it is thundering, 20% (* 1.2) increase if it is raining.
* If the power is higher than 5, there is a 0% to 0.1292% chance (chance based on power) to change the windmill to a generator and drop 0 to 4 iron ingots.

Note for those using Buildcraft: the Geothermal Generator will now connect to Buildcraft's Waterproof Pipes, and will receive lava carried by them. It will also accept lava directly from an adjacent Buildcraft Pump.
Usage
As with all Generators, the lava-based fuel of choice is inserted into the lower slot, and optionally an RE Battery in the upper slot. The Geothermal Generator will charge the battery or output power at a rate of 20 EU/t.

It is returned to your inventory.
If you have the BuildCraft mod installed, you can generate near-infinite power. Simply connect one (or more) of these magical machines to a BuildCraft pump pumping from a lava lake in the Nether.

<strong>INFINITE<small>*</small> POWER!</strong>

Also, if you have <span class="pops">Eloraam's RedPower</span> installed, you can pump the lava from the volcano** into the generator.

<small>* Not responsible for limitations due to laws of physics.</small>

<small>** Not quite as "infinite" as the Nether.</small>

Tip
* Using the Geothermal Generator with a connection to a Pump will provide an output of 30,000 EU instead of 20,000.
Note:: Though it gives an increased EU (30,000), there is still a 200 EU per operation cost for the pump. The Geothermal Generator will charge the adjacent pump, for a total output of 29,800 EU per lava source tile.

Tips for Powerconverters-Mod
* With the Powerconverters-Mod, steam engines can burn lava buckets and transfer the power through an engine generator. The engine generators are expensive, and buckets of lava are complicated to deal with, but it would produce 50,000 EU per lava bucket as opposed to 20,000 EU.

HAYO
Ge-o-ther-mal, doesn't that sound really good? Yeah, it does. And why? Because it's freakin awesome!

A Geothermal Generator works on the same basic principle as normal Generators do.
But instead of wastefully burning stuff, these machines use the heat of pure Magma to provide a clean, yet powerful energy source. Just put a bucket of freshly gathered lava in,
and watch your RE Batteries charge up! HAYO!

<span style="color:red">Attention: We take no responsibility for any physical damage customers may take in the process of filling Geothermal Generators with lava. </span>

<span style="color:red">You may not sue us for payment of any fire damage done to your housing. </span>
Generators are used to either supply direct power to machines or charge RE Batteries. The basic Generators operate on conventional fuel, which includes most wooden items, Charcoal, Coal, certain plants, and scrap.

While costly in terms of fuel, basic generators are also one of the most mobile power sources, and don't suffer the drawbacks of requiring sunlight, water, lava, or proper wind as the case is with the other types of generators.
