The Steam Generator requires heat in order to boil water into Steam. Steam is mainly used in the Kinetic Steam Generator to generate EU. The name of the machine is "Steam Boiler" in 1.12.2

Recipe
Usage
Boiling water causes the Steam Generator to calcify as impurities build up inside. This can be reset by breaking and replacing the Steam Generator. Calcification is measured by percentage, and has no effect until it is at 100%, at which point the Steam Generator will stop working.

Using Distilled Water however, there are no impurities in the water, so the Steam Generator will not calcify no matter how long it is used. Distilled Water is also produced from condensing Steam in either a Condenser or Kinetic Steam Generator, meaning a closed cycle can be created. Water, however, would require a constant supply, and the produced Distilled Water to be dealt with separately. Water and Distilled Water cannot be used at the same time, but once a Steam Generator's internal tank is empty, it can accept either, ignoring what it previously had.

The amount of Steam produced is controlled by options in the GUI. For every 1 mB/t of water put in, 100 mB/t of Steam will be produced. If normal Steam is being produced, every 100mB/t of Steam also requires 100 hU to maintain the heating required. If the pressure is changed however, this value increases. The required heat increases logarithmically per bar of pressure.

At 221+ bars, Superheated Steam is produced instead of normal Steam. The most efficient Superheated Steam setting is at 221 bars of pressure, as it takes 200 hU per 100 mb/t of Superheated Steam produced. Superheated Steam is produced at 374°C. This temperature can be reached at 221 bars of pressure. At temperatures above 500°C, the Steam Generator will explode, so the pressure should not be set above 250 bars, or Heat added without pumping/releasing water in.

If the required heat (based off the water input and pressure) is not provided the Steam Generator will fluctuate between producing Steam and just releasing water. It is strongly recommended to set the pressure to 221 bars if Superheated Steam is desired else just leave it at 0 bars unless a specific amount of heat usage is needed for any reason.

Visual steam explosions (that don't affect the environment, but will hurt mobs and the player) indicate a loss of water. Steam explosions will happen, if not all steam that is produced by the Steam Generator is outputted into a valid tank (for example Fluid Distributors, BuildCraft pipes, etc). Keep in mind that the minimum output of 100 mB/t (2 buckets per second) is a very large amount of liquid so it is recommended to directly transfer the steam into a Kinetic Steam Generator as it will quickly fill up any tank.
The Steam Generator will eject steam automatically in every valid direction. The best way to prevent steam from blocking the distilled water supply is by using two Fluid Distributors: one for inputting distilled water and one for outputting steam. The other four faces can then be used for heat supply.

Any Heat Generator can be used to heat a Steam Generator from any side (unlike most other Heat Machines that only have 1 input face), but only the Liquid Heat Exchanger and Electric Heat Generator provide up to 100 hU, that is more practical then several Fluid Heat Generators that would be needed in order to reach 100 °C. Using an Electric Heat Generator will always result in a net loss of energy, even if all the produced (Superheated) Steam is turned into EU using the Kinetic Steam Generator connected to a Kinetic Generator.
Tutorial:Replication

Teltboy: /* Examples */ added UU matter value for block of diamond and enchanted golden apple

Experimental
This is a tutorial on replicating items. There are a lot of items that can be replicated out of EU.
Before starting make sure you have:
* an MFSU,
* a ton of resources, and
* vast amounts of EU.
Replication is a very expensive luxus and you won't be able to start if you don't fulfill the pre-conditions.

UU-Liquid
The first thing you'll need is called UU-Liquid, or Universal-Usage-Liquid.
To make this you need a mass fabricator:

This machine will accept 512 EUp (high voltage) and create UU-Liquid very slowly. It is strongly recommended to feed it with Scrap, otherwise it will consume 10 times as much energy! Creating one bucket of Uu-Liquid requires roughly 22 million EU if you supply more than 500 stacks of scrap. Don't worry, most items only require tiny amounts of UU-Liquid. For example dirt requires 0.00016 buckets and diamond 0.035 buckets of UU-Liquid per item.

Scanning
Now that you have your UU-Liquid, you will need a Scanner:

Before scanning an item, you need a way to store the information the scanner will output. This information is also called 'Pattern'. To do so you need some Memory Crystals and a Pattern Storage.

Either place the Pattern Storage directly adjacent to the scanner or put a Memory Crystal inside the scanner.
Now, put any item you want to replicate in the scanner and power it with 512EUp. The scanner will analyze the item and give information on how much UU-Liquid and EU you'll need to create the item. Note that not all items can be scanned. Scanning one item will consume roughly 850000 EU.

Replicating
Replication requires four things:
* UU-Liquid,
* a pattern,
* some EU, and
* a Replicator.
In the meantime, you should have the first three things. The forth is crafted like this:

The Replicator accepts up to 2048 EUp (extreme voltage). To get the pattern into the replicator, you need a Pattern Storage (with the stored information) adjacent to it. The UU-Liquid can be supplied either by using Universal Fluid Cells or BuildCraft pipes. That's it!
Simply press the green arrow and the replication starts. This will consume some EU and, when finished, you'll get your desired item.

Examples
Here are some examples of items you can scan and replicate:
