A Geothermal Generator works on the same basic principle as normal Generators do.

Geothermal generators use the heat of Lava to generate electricity. With the release of IC², the generators accept both Lava Buckets and Lava Cells. The latter are stackable and thus require less maintenance, but cost Tin to produce.

Buildcraft Note: It is possible to supply Lava to the Geothermal Generator using Buildcraft Waterproof pipes. It will also accept lava directly from an adjacent Buildcraft Pump.

Usage
As with all Generators, the lava-based fuel of choice is inserted into the lower slot, and optionally an RE Battery in the upper slot. The Geothermal Generator will charge the battery or output power at a rate of 20 EU/t.

A single Geothermal Generator can store 24 units of lava internally and another stack of 64 lava cells will wait in the fuel queue until needed or removed by player - thus, inserting a full stack of Lava Cells will instantly use up 24 of them and fill out the lava gauge. Unlike the furnace, the Geothermal Generator does not consume the bucket when a lava bucket is used as fuel. It is returned to your inventory.

Input: Lava Buckets, Lava Cells, or placed next to a Pump

Output: 20,000 EU per Lava Bucket or Lava Cell at a rate of 20 EU/t

Additional Usages
If you have the BuildCraft mod installed, you can generate near infinite of power. Simply connect one (or more) of these magical machines to a BuildCraft Pump pumping from a lava lake in the Nether.

INFINITE* POWER!

If you have Eloraam's RedPower installed, lava can also be pumped from a RedPower volcano** into the generator.

* Not responsible for limitations due to laws of physics.
** Not quite as "infinite" as the Nether.

Tip
Using the Geothermal Generator with a connection to a Pump will provide an output of 30,000 EU instead of 20,000. For it to work properly, the Pump has to be above a lava source tile, and the Geothermal Generator needs to be touching the Pump.

Additionally, an Empty Cell needs to be placed into the top of the pump (for unknown reason), and the initial powering of the pump can be done by placing 1 Redstone in the bottom slot of the Pump.

Note: Though it gives an increased EU (30,000), there is still a 200 EU per operation cost for the pump. The Geothermal Generator will charge the adjacent pump, for a total output of 29,800 EU per lava source tile.

Powerconverters-Mod
With the Powerconverters-Mod, steam engines can burn lava buckets and transfer the power through an engine generator. The engine generators are expensive, and buckets of lava are complicated to deal with, but it would produce 50,000 EU per lava bucket as opposed to 20,000 EU.

A Geothermal Generator works on the same basic principle as normal Generators do.
But instead of wastefully burning stuff, these machines use the heat of pure Magma to provide a clean, yet powerful energy source. Just put a bucket of freshly gathered lava in,
and watch your RE Batteries charge up! HAYO!
The Mining Laser is a powerful high-tech tool with a variety of applications. It can be used as an insta-mining tool with a relatively low EU consumption, as well as a high-power AoE block remover, or even as a weapon. All blocks destroyed by the Laser are dropped, with the exception of non-drop blocks like Glass or Leaves. However, due to the destructive nature of the Laser, there is a chance that the block will be destroyed and not drop anything. IndustrialCraft machines drop a Machine block, as if they were destroyed by a pickaxe. As of 1.337, the Mining Laser can use energy from a LapPack.

As of 1.90, the Mining Laser has 7 different modes. These modes can be switched by holding the M key and right-clicking.

The Mining Laser is most likely one the most fun items in IC2.
Firing Modes
The Mining Laser can store 200,000 EU, which determines how many shots of each type can be fired. The block penetration distance depends on the hardness of the particular block. In this chart, block penetration is based on smoothstone and dirt. For explosive shots, the penetration radius denotes the radius of the explosion.

Also, hitting enderman (and probably other neutral mobs) with explosive shots, they do not be come hostile to you. This only happens when hitting the mob with the explosion, as opposed to the laser directly. This is probably a bug.

It should also be noted that the Mining Laser can be used in Low-Focus mode to mine both faster than the Diamond Drill and at half the energy cost! HAYO!

Note: In v1.64 the mining laser will sometimes not fire in horizontal mode. Changing to a different mode restores it's function.

Super-Heat mode was added in 1.90.

If a super-heat laser is fired on a sand or cobble block, the block will be replaced with a glass/smooth stone block instead of dropping one. Doing so immediately terminates the beam.

When a super-heat laser is fired at a block such as smoothstone, where the 'normal' drop can be smelted into the block itself, the block will be dropped as if mined with a silk touch-enchanted tool.

When a super-heat laser is fired at a clay block, 4 brick items will be dropped.

Charging
This tool may only be charged in an MFE Unit or an MFS Unit.
Top=Mining Laser
Bottom=
}}

It can also be fully charged immediately by firing it once while you are wearing a charged LapPack, assuming you have enough enough energy for at least one shot left inside of the laser's internal storage.
Seems little rubbish, but who cares! HAYO!!

Please note that in the machine interface above, the output of 32 eu/s is incorrect.

HAYO
What do you do, if even the Diamond Drill isn't powerful and speedy enough?

You build yourself a Mining Laser, that's what!

This device uses the awesome intensifying power of Crystals to turn energy into energy BEAMZ!

And these beamz will easily burn right through everything: Stone, Dirt, Ore, Creepers...!!

Just aim at something you don't want to exist and pull the right trigger to burn it to a crisp, HAYO!!

However, due to the MASSIVE energy consumption, well-planned usage is advised.

The Mining Laser can fire a reasonable number of laser beams, but due to the large capacity inherent to the crystal design, the laser can only be recharged in a MFE Unit or MFSU.
Solar Panels are generators that utilize the energy of the Sun to generate EU. This fact means that they cannot work underground (unless there is an unobstructed view of the sky), in the Nether or the End. They also don't work at night.
The addition of electronic circuits in their latest design has done some strange things. Now that they have awareness they have all decided (union rules, nothing we can do) that they won't work as hard if the weather is bad.
Solar Panels output power at a rate of 1 EU/t during daylight hours (from 6:20 to 17:45). Power will output to any side except the top. Inclement weather (i.e., storms) affects energy production.

Due to the relative weakness of power generation, Solar Panels are often assembled into so-called Solar Flowers (when using Copper Cable), whereby as many Solar Panels as possible are connected to a BatBox using cable lengths of four segments or less. These constructions provide the benefit of compact and relatively cheap Solar Panel arrangements without energy losses. This was the most efficient design that existed in IC1 and earlier versions of IC2. The addition of Tin Cable, which allows micro currents to be carried 40 blocks, has made other arrangements equally feasible. Now, arrangements using a combination of tin and copper cables can provide superior efficiency, and don't require such intricate planning.

Bugs
*Solar Panels are bugged with the WorldEdit stack command, they will appear pointing north, therefore not working yet it is just a visual glitch and the solar panels will continue to work! HAYO!

HAYO
Ah, the technology of Future!
Solar Panels are the futuristic and 100% clean alternative to gather energy. They don't even use any kind of fuel but the sun, seriously!

You can just place them somewhere in sunlight, put a battery in and be happy.

As fair salesmen, we feel responsible to tell you that charging up RE Batteries by Solar Panels may take some time.
This is not because of the low efficiency of the Solar Panels, but because our RE Batteries are so frikkin' awesome, they just need a long time to charge. HAYO!

Tin cables can only tolerate up to 5 EU per packet, but they are very cheap to make and have extremely low energy loss. This makes them the ideal cable for solar flowers, since each produce a current equal to 1 EU/t.

This wire cannot be insulated, so it cannot be painted. This cable is also prone to electrocuting nearby objects, so be careful, even if the supported current is too low.

Note the difference between EU/p and EU/t. If you connect 40 solar panels to a length of tin cable, the cable would still not burn out - the cable will transport 40 1-EU packets, not one 40-EU packet. In theory one can therefore connect an unlimited number of solar panels to a single Tin Cable. You will still lose 1EU per 40 blocks, but in a large Solar panel array this will mean close to nothing. 79 blocks of tin wire can connect 239 Solar panels (79 on the top and both sides, plus one on each end), and if you tap the wire on the bottom of one side, only 1EU will be lost in the cable.
In theory, 40 packets of 1 EU/t = 40 losses after the 39th cable.
The MV Transformer is used to turn High Power (512 EUP) into Medium Power (128 EUP) and back. This is useful for powering advanced machines and for medium-range energy transport.

By default, the Transformer accepts 512 EUP input and outputs 128 EUP. A 512 EUP or higher rated cable must be wired into the output face (the 3-dotted one) and 128 EUP or higher rated cable must be wired into the other faces.

A Redstone signal may be applied to reverse the conversion, thereby emitting 512 EUP from the output face (the 3-dotted one), and accepting 128 EUP or lower from the input faces. In reverse operation, 512 EUP or higher rated cable must be wired to the output face and any rate cable may be wired to the input faces.
When using any Transformer, remember that the 3-dotted side means higher current and the 1-dotted sides mean lower current. You can change the direction the 3-dotted side is facing by right-clicking a 1-dotted face with a Wrench.

Converting to MV:
In order to convert from HV to MV, you must point the cable carrying HV from a HV Transformer or MFS Unit to the 3-dotted side and then link a cable that can carry MV to one of the sides with a single dot. Then that cable will be carrying MV that you can link to advanced machines, store in a MFE Transmitter or convert to LV with an LV Transformer.

Converting to HV:
In order to convert from MV to HV, point the cable carrying MV from a MFE Transmitter or a LV Transformer to one of the one-dotted sides and then link a cable that can carry HV to the 3-dotted side. Do not forget to apply redstone to the MV Transformer.

The Multi-Functional Electric storage unit, or MFE, is a Tier 2 energy storage device. It is able to store up to 600,000 EU. It can accept up to 128 EU-Packet power, with unlimited EU/t, from its 5 input faces and output 128 EU-Packet power, with a max of 128EU/t, from its output face.
Like all storage units, its output face is marked by a special texture, which usually faces the player when the block is placed. The direction of the output face can be changed by right-clicking with a Bronze Wrench onto any of the input faces of the block; normally, this will point the output face towards the player, but holding Shift while clicking will point the output face in the opposite direction. Be aware that right-clicking the MFE Unit while pointing at its output face will dismantle it.

I have noticed lately that as of the v1.64 update the rubber boots will cause a server to crash if the wearer of the boots takes any other damage than fall damage. That is all I have to say for now and I am sorry if this messes with the wiki page (I am still new to using wiki editing.)

(Moved from the page)
P.S.
Incidentally, I experimented using NBTedit, which allowed me to do things like set damage to boots initially to -10000, and health to 10000, set fall distance to 10000 without actually going up in the air, and generally play around. In the old minecraft where armor effectiveness was based on the damage to the armor, setting negative values to damage allowed armor to heal you when you get hurt. Damage could go as low as -32767, so the armor lasted a long time, but if you heal to over 32768 health, your health rolls over to -32767, so you die suddenly. This doesn't really belong but people can edit it out if they want, but I felt like mentioning it.

Technical Details
I would like to expand on this. This applies for IC2 v1.71 from the Tekkit mod pack for Minecraft 1.1.
Fall damage (d) is normally equal to the height (h) fallen minus 3. The boots reduce damage sustained by a factor of 8 rounded down. So...

d = (h - 3) / 8 (rounded down)

Height
damage to player
0 - 10
0
11 - 18
1
19 - 26
2
27 - 34
3
35 - 42
4
43 - 50
5
...

163 - 170
20

We have also observed that the maximum damage to boots is 64 (they break at 65) and the damage to boots(d) = (h-3) * 7/16, so falling 83 blocks for example causes 35 damage to boots. The maximum height to fall without destroying the boots is 150.
I think the idea of hiding recipes doesn't fit with the point of a wiki, or with the point of the whole internet. How are people supposed to find them out? Brute force searching? That's not fun; that's tedious, monotonous, and painful. If there was something like a recipe book built into the game, I would understand encouraging people to find out the recipes on their own, but as the game is now, it's infeasible to discover recipes on one's own. There are 512 possible recipes with a single ingredient, like UU Matter. With all the 260 items in the vanilla game (not counting metadata), there are 5.4*10^21 possible recipes. == Re:Water Tower Design ==

A more efficient design would be to place a wire between the mill and the central cable/batbox. The difference is an addition .02 EU per tick, which adds up over several hundred water mills. Also, by stringing them along tin cable to meet at a central batbox 39 tin cable away from the furthest mill, you can save a lot of bat boxes by sacrificing a little space. If you're really worried about space, a water mill 'web' with tin cable should be a theoretically effective design, since the packets will never exceed 5EU a tick. This makes it possible to create a ring with a radius of 37, with a rather high potential EU production (forcing an upgrade to an MFE or possibly a MFSU, if my numbers aren't totally off), though the exact number I haven't quite figured out yet.

Water Mills Effectiveness
These watermills doesnt seem to be much effective if unmanned. Even considering the low iron cost, they still are as twice uneffective as the solar panels. Am I not seeing something in the design? Trepach 21:19, 25 May 2012 (CEST)
Answer from MatLaPatate:
Maybe because it has not been created in order to be used as you do ?
Watermill are a very usefull gen at the beginning (because of producing 2 with one gen and because you won't use coal to run your machine)
But, this gen is not made to generate itself energy, it give you energy Vs the attention of Steve. Use Redpower (with waterbucket/deployer/filter) or Solar/Windmill to produce good amount of energy.

This is logic. Lappack is a tool from Tier II.
Batbox and Geogen are from Tier I (considering Geogen have less than 32 EU/t output).
In fact, Geogen have better storage capacity than MFE, because of the stack of lava cells you can put into, or up to 480 000 if you don't use the slot to put more lava cells. But it's from Tier I.
That's why you can't charge your Lappack in.

When you insert the scrap it says "Amplifier:" with a number below it. Assuming that the number means the number EU left to amplify with, then it should cost 170,000 EU to create matter with scrap not 125,000.
Each Scrap produces 5,000 of this amplification and one matter can be created with 34 scrap.
Can anyone confirm, or elaborate?
Advanced energy system
With tin and diamond cable (glass fiber)
With IC², you can now use 24 diamond cables (12/12 on 2 face opposed) and put 4*2 (2 face, hier too) copper calbe (insulated, of course) +5*2 tin cable to gather 1 (on the diamond cable) +4*2=8 solars pannels(on the copper cables) +2*5 +2*1 (at the end of your line of cable):
Result:
Numbers of solar pannels: 1+2*4+2*5+2*1=1+8+10+2=21 solar pannel per diamond cable, so 24*21= 504 solar pannels, 504 EU/tick.
Loss ?
so, if you add the losses of the differents cables: per "line" of cable: 5*tin cable=5*1/40=5/40 + 4*8/40=32+5=37/40 >1 ... that's why you have no losses on each line of cable.
If we add the diamond cabble losses (1 per 40 cables in 1.64 isn't it ?), there's 12*1/40+37/40=59/40, and i think that 2 EU lost (on each face of the MFSU) for 502 "won" is reasonnable isn't it ?

PS: sorry for my english, i'm french ... ^^
PPS: Even if it should in theory works, there's a bug when a tin cable joins a copper cable, and EU produced by the solar pannel on the tin cables won't be counted.
That's why I advise you not to use copper cable between diamond and tin cables, it should works better ;) (It makes 11 solars pannels per diamond cables with no losses, but it's not as cheap as my system with copper cables if they wasn't bugged, because for 505 EU, you will need 45 diamond cables)

Solar Flowers
For those of you looking for videos on how to make Solar Flowers, you do NOT need a switch cable to make them. Use Copper Wire to connect all the Solar Panels to one wire, then run it down to an MFE Transmitter. From there, run 2x Insulated Gold Cable (at least 3 units) out of the output face of the storage device (the MFE) into an LV Transformer with the three dots facing the Gold Cable. Then run Copper Wire out of any of the other of the faces of your transformer into any number of basic machines, such as Induction Furnaces, Macerators, Recyclers, etc...

Note: If you are going to use an MFS Unit then you will need to run 3x Insulated HV Cable (try not to use too much, it loses energy rapidly) or, alternatively, Glass Fibre Cable to an MV Transformer with the three dots facing that wire, then run your Gold Cable to your LV transformer, and so on.

Hope this helped!

PROTIP: Most Solar Flowers are either a pyramid of 5 or 13 Solar Panels.
It's useful to know that if you need "transformer upgrader" to use more than 32 EU/t, you can ever improve your machines without using it because of their default consumption of 1/2/3 EU/t, and that mean you probably can put 5 overclocker upgrade before using transformer upgrade. == Advanced energy system ==

Solar Panels are generators that utilize the energy of the Sun to generate EU. This fact means that they cannot work underground (unless there is an unobstructed view of the sky) or in the Nether. They also don't work at night.

The addition of the electronic circuits in their latest design has done some strange things. Now that they have awareness they have all decided (union rules, nothing we can do) that they will not be working as hard if the weather goes bad.

Now, solar flowers are outdated because very inneficient compared to solar farms with tin cabble, copper cabble and glass fiber cabble.

The Mining Laser has 6 different modes. These modes can be switched by holding the M key and right-clicking.
The Mining Laser can store 100,000 EU, which determines how many shots of each type can be fired. The block penetration distance depends on the hardness of the particular block. In this chart, block penetration is based on smoothstone and dirt. For explosive shots, the penetration radius denotes the radius of the explosion.
